So yesterday I arrived at the Kona airport and got all my luggage - Yesssss - my first fear of the trip was that my bike box would not arrive or that my huge suitcase would be lost in Hawaiian Airline land. Got the rental car at Hertz and made it to my hotel right around sunset.
Checked In.
Made it to my room........ Why didn't anyone warn me that the host hotel, King Kamehameha Hotel, is from pre-1970!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a Hotelie I spend my time critiquing things like gross hotels and restaurants in my spare time with Emily - AHHHHH! NIGHTMARE! My parents are not arriving until Thursday so I really had no one to share this info with and was freaking out. Then I realized there was nothing I could do about it so I may as well chill. Its a good thing I'm staying there anyway because EVERYTHING is right there including the swim start, transition, race check in, Ironman store, welcome/awards banquets.... everything.
Anyway, I stripped the bed, put down my own sweatshirt blanket and my own pillow (I had heard it was crummy but not SICK) and went into town to chill out and get a bite to eat.
Found Lava Java.
Ate delish food and checked email while pros walked around in their gear even though it was after dark and they obviously were no longer training... just looking the part. This place is crazzzzzy!
Went back to my lovely hotel for a good sleep. Yay.

Awesome! Glad your bike made it safe and sound...you'll need that for the race.
Personally I'd rather stay at a crummy joint close to the start line than a nice place far away. And at least you don't have to sleep in a tent...with an oversized air mattress... :D
